Ankle Sprains

Sprains to your ankle can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort. An ankle sprain is an injury to one of the ligaments of the ankle, and can be caused by a good deal of factors. A fall, a twist or a blow to the ankle can result in a sprain.

Symptoms of a sprained ankle can include pain and soreness, swelling and difficulty walking. A sprain can be relatively minor or quite severe, and so it's important to seek medical attention if a sprain is suspected. Left untreated, a sprain can lead to ankle instability.

Dr. Jackson will evaluate your injury carefully to determine what kind of treatment is necessary. If the sprain is not severe, treatment may include the following:

  • Rest
  • Ice applied to the injury
  • Compression to reduce swelling
  • Elevation
  • Physical therapy
  • Pain medication

In the event of a more severe sprain, surgery and rehabilitation may be required to ensure that the ankle heals properly.
