Bunions

A bunion is a disorder that presents as simply a bump on the side of the big toe, but is actually caused by a misalignment of the bones of the foot. The bump occurs when the bones of the big toe are pushed inward towards the second toe rather than pointing straight ahead, and it can be painful.

While bunions can typically be identified by sight, a doctor may take an X-ray of your foot to assess the situation. Although bunions will not go away and tend to worsen with time, steps can be taken to treat them and ease the pain.

Dr. Jackson may recommend treatment options for a patient with bunions like:

  • Recommended footwear
  • Padding for the affected area
  • Icing the area to reduce pain
  • Custom orthotics

If the bunion is severe enough to interfere with walking or daily life, Dr. Jackson may recommend surgical treatment.
