Cysts
A cyst is a small sac-like pocket of fluid or gas that develops on the skin. Cysts can develop anywhere on the body, but are particularly uncomfortable when they develop on the foot, as they may hinder walking or movement.
Cysts can be caused by a number of things:
- Infections
- Chronic inflammatory conditions
- Genetic conditions
- Tumors
- Obstructions to the flow of fluid
A cyst will feel like a lump of tissue, frequently full of fluid. Because cysts can be uncomfortable or even painful, it’s important to treat them. Frequent treatment options include:
- Using a needle to drain the cyst
- Using a catheter to drain the cyst
- Removing the cyst via surgery
- Treating the underlying condition that caused the cyst
Most cysts are benign, and thus do not require serious treatment except to relieve discomfort. In some cases, however, the cyst can signify a serious infection or disorder, and therefore it’s important to let a doctor examine and diagnose a potential cyst.
