Hammertoes
A hammertoe is a condition that involves the bending of the joints of the toes and makes them appear crooked. The condition generally get worse with time, and so treatment is crucial.
Hammertoes can be caused by muscle/tendon imbalance, improperly fitting footwear, or sometimes trauma to the toes. Symptoms of hammertoes include:
- Pain or irritation
- Corns and calluses on the skin
- Inflammation or redness
- Bending of the toes
If you suspect you have a hammertoe, Dr. Jackson will thoroughly examine the affected area in order to make a proper diagnosis. Hammertoes do not go away by themselves, so he will develop a treatment plan that is specific to your condition.
While sometimes surgery is necessary to correct hammertoes, other non-surgical treatment options include:
- Padding for the area
- Properly fitted footwear
- Custom orthotics
- Injection therapy
- Splinting to realign the toes
Hammertoes are a progressive condition and can cause a great deal of discomfort, so if you suspect you have this condition, it's important to seek treatment as soon as possible.
