Ingrown Toenails

An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail curves and grows into the skin. It typically happens at the sides of the nail, and can cause pain and irritation.

Because the toenail can break the skin, infection is a possibility. This is why ingrown toenails must be treated rather than left alone.

Ingrown toenails can be caused by:

  • Trauma to the nail
  • Cutting nails too short
  • Too-tight footwear
  • Heredity

Though ingrown toenails can sometimes be treated at home, it's important to leave treatment up to a physician if infection is suspected. Dr. Jackson will assess the condition of the toenail and determine the best next step.

To prevent ingrown toenails, you should be careful to trim your toenails in a relatively straight line and avoid cutting them too short. Additionally, it's important to wear shoes and socks that are not too tight in the toe area.
