Mallet Toe
Mallet toe is a condition in which the toe is bent at the upper joint and appears to curl. It is similar to hammertoe, in which a toe curls at the middle joint. Both conditions can result in pain and discomfort.
This condition is commonly caused by ill-fitting footwear, such as shoes with tight toe boxes or high heels. Because of this, mallet toes are typically preventable by wearing properly fitting shoes.
Once a mallet toe develops, it can cause corns and calluses in the area as well as general discomfort. A number of treatment options are available for mallet toes, including:
- Roomier footwear
- Shoe Orthotics
- Stress-relieving pads for shoes
In some cases of inflexible or severe mallet toes, surgical options may be necessary.
