Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is an infection that can occur on any of your nails, but can be particularly uncomfortable when it develops on the toenails.

When fungi interact with the nail, they can invade the skin through tiny cuts or the nail bed, and that’s when infection begins. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, so toenails are particularly at risk when confined inside a shoe.

Common symptoms of nail fungus include:

  • Thickening of the nail
  • Brittleness of the nail
  • Dullness of the nail
  • Discoloration or distortion of the nail’s shape

Once Dr. Jackson diagnoses you with nail fungus, he will determine what kind of treatment will be best for you. Oral antifungal medications are frequently effective, although topical medications and antifungal lacquers for the nail can be helpful as well. In some extreme cases, surgery may be necessary.
