Spurs
Spurs are hooks of bone that commonly form on the heel of the foot, and frequently occur concurrently with plantar fasciitis. Because of this, the heel spur itself is often thought to not be the cause of any pain or inflammation itself.
Heel spurs can occur in patients who do not suffer from plantar fasciitis as well. Regardless, the treatment options for heel spurs and plantar fasciitis are much the same. Methods of treating each condition include:
- Resting the foot
- Icing the affected area
- Stretching the foot
- Anti-inflammatory medicine
- Orthotics or night splints
Once your doctor determines a treatment method for your heel spur and it resolves itself, it’s important to prevent future occurrences. Prevention methods include wearing properly-fitting footwear, stretching and wearing custom orthotics, if necessary.
