Stress Fractures
A stress fracture is a tiny break that can occur in the small bones of the foot. The most common type of stress fracture occurs around the second or third metatarsal, closer to the inside of the foot, but fractures can occur anywhere in the foot.
Stress fractures can be caused by a number of things, including:
- Overuse or overtraining
- Improper training
- Improper footwear
- Foot deformities
Because a stress fracture can worsen with time and can lead to a complete break, it's important to seek treatment right away if you fear you have a fracture. Symptoms can include pain, swelling and redness in the affected area.
Dr. Jackson will examine your foot, possibly using X-rays or other imaging studies to determine if your problem is indeed a stress fracture. In some cases, surgery is recommended, but non-surgical treatments include rest and immobilization of the affected foot.
