Turf Toe

Turf toe is an injury to the soft tissue surrounding that joint of the big toe, and is a type of sesamoid injury. A sesamoid is a bone that's embedded in a tendon, and injuries to sesamoids are frequently caused by athletic activities that put pressure on the ball of the foot.

When the big toe is extended beyond its normal range, turf toe can occur. Symptoms of turf toe include sharp pain and swelling of the affected area, and the motion of the toe can be limited.

If you suspect you have turf toe, Dr. Jackson will perform a thorough examination of the foot, focusing on the big toe joint, to make a proper diagnosis. Treatment options can include surgery, but can also include:

  • Padding or taping the area
  • Immobilization of the toe
  • Medication
  • Custom orthotics

Because turf toe limits the range of motion of the toe, it can hinder your ability to walk. It's important to seek out medical treatment to ensure that the condition does not worsen.
