What Happens During an Ankle Sprain?

A common symptom of an ankle sprain is redness and swelling after it has been twisted. It can happen as a result of stepping off of a curb unexpectedly, and this may cause the ligaments on the outside of the ankle to stretch and tear. When an ankle sprain is mild, the ankle may feel stiff, and it can be relatively stable to walk on. Bruising and tenderness may be apparent if the sprain is severe, and walking can be difficult. It is important to rest and elevate the affected foot immediately after the incident has occurred, and this may help to relieve a portion of the swelling. Some patients find it useful to wear an elastic compression wrap, and this can be beneficial in providing adequate stability as the healing process occurs. If you have sprained your ankle, please consult with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose and effectively this condition.

Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact Brian D. Jackson, DPM from Neuhaus Foot and Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains are the result of a tear in the ligaments within the ankle. These injuries may happen when you make a rapid shifting movement while your foot is planted. A less common way to sprain your ankle is when your ankle rolls inward while your foot turns outward.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Pain at the sight of the tear
  • Bruising/Swelling
  • Ankle area is tender to touch
  • In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear
  • Skin discoloration

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

It is important to ask your doctor about rehab options after you receive treatment for your injury. Stretching, strength training, and balance exercises may help the ankle heal while also preventing further injury.

As the main stabilizing structure supporting the arch, the posterior tibial tendon is an important and hard-working tendon. Though with repetition or overuse, this tendon can become injured. This injury can contribute to pain and stress on the arch which can change the gait and even cause the arch to collapse over time. Prescription orthotics that are custom fit to the individual’s feet may be one form of treatment a podiatrist might use to help support and stabilize the arch and correct gait abnormalities. If you have pain on the inside of your foot or ankle, an appointment with a podiatrist is suggested for an accurate diagnosis and evaluation of your condition.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Brian D. Jackson, DPM from Neuhaus Foot and Ankle. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet

The Duties of a Podiatrist

A podiatrist is a medical professional that specializes in the care of the feet and ankles. A podiatrist’s duties typically include examining patients, diagnosing various foot and ankle conditions, and providing the appropriate treatments for a variety of foot and ankle needs. Some podiatrists specialize in podiatric surgery and perform operations such as joint replacement surgeries and bunionectomies. Podiatrists are also often the first to notice signs of diabetes, neuropathy, peripheral artery disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and other systemic conditions that can affect the feet. In those cases, a podiatrist may not only treat your disease-related foot and ankle problems, but also refer you to a specialist for the suspected systemic disease. If you are experiencing any foot or ankle pain, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with a podiatrist near you.

If you are experiencing pain in the feet or ankles, don’t join the stubborn majority refusing treatment. Feel free to contact Brian D. Jackson, DPM from Neuhaus Foot and Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Podiatrist?

Someone would seek the care of a podiatrist if they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems, etc.

Podiatric Treatment

A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Drugs
  • Orthotic inserts or soles
  • Surgery on lower extremity fractures

A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.

Is Shockwave Therapy Painful?

Shockwave therapy is a potential treatment option for various foot and ankle conditions, particularly chronic plantar fasciitis, which causes pain in the heel and arch. Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses pressurized air or electromagnetic pulses to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes in the affected area. There are two main types of shockwave treatments - low energy and high energy. Low energy shockwave treatments are typically painless or mildly painful. High energy shockwave treatments can be painful and sometimes require anesthesia. If you have chronic plantar fasciitis and conservative treatments have not helped, shockwave therapy may be another treatment option for you to consider. To learn more about this and other treatments for plantar fasciitis, please consult with a podiatrist.

Shockwave therapy is a treatment commonly used to treat various injuries and conditions, particularly plantar fasciitis in the feet. To learn more, consult with Brian D. Jackson, DPM from Neuhaus Foot and Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a new treatment option designed to treat bone conditions such as tennis elbow, shoulder pain, and others. Shockwave therapy uses high intensity sound waves that are directed to the affected tissues of the body with pinpoint accuracy. The effects are very beneficial, leading to a production of collagen fibers, eliminating inflammation.

Who Benefits from Shockwave?

Shockwave is recommended for patients suffering from heel pain and associated problems. Heel pain is a common condition which can be caused by obesity, overexertion, and spending a substantial amount of time on hard floors with your feet exposed and unsupported.

Fast and Easy

The therapy is actually a simple process that can leave patients feeling better the very next day. Shockwave therapy is not as dramatic as it sounds. It enables more blood flow to effected areas, addressing the source of the problem and allowing treatment to last for a long time.

Treatment & Recovery Time

Shockwave treatment will enable your feet to recover quickly. This is especially important since surgery is not required. It is cost effective and does not require the use of anesthesia. This treatment is a better option to surgery, since it is proven safe.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Columbia and Pulaski, TN . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Can My Ankle Pain Be Caused by Arthritis?

Arthritis can occur in any joint—including the ankle. When this condition occurs in the ankle, it is typically either post-traumatic arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Post-traumatic arthritis can be caused by an old ankle sprain, fracture, or other injury that did not heal properly and has caused degenerative changes. Post-traumatic arthritis can take decades to manifest. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic disease that affects joints throughout the body. In some cases, RA can cause inflammation and alignment problems in your ankles. Through examination, observation, tests, and gait analyses, the source of your ankle pain—whether it is arthritis or some other condition—can be properly diagnosed and treated by a podiatrist.

Ankle pain can be caused by a number of problems and may be potentially serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Brian D. Jackson, DPM from Neuhaus Foot and Ankle. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Bursitis
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.
