There are many benefits to frequently performing foot exercises. Stretching and exercising the feet make them stronger, and this can be helpful in possibly preventing falls, in addition to reducing existing foot and ankle pain. The range of motion is often improved, and slow stretching can improve flexibility. When the toes are raised, pointed, and curled, it may help to strengthen the Achilles tendon, which is connected to the heel. This can be done by sitting in a chair, and alternating pointing, raising, and curling the toes. Each position can be held for a few seconds, then repeated approximately 10 times. An effective stretch for the toes is called the toe splay and is also done while sitting in a chair. The heels can be firmly resting on the ground, and the toes are stretched out and moved several times. The entire foot can be strengthened when toe extensions are performed. While one leg is crossed over the other, take one hand and manually move the toes back until a gentle stretch is felt. If you would like more information about the benefits of exercising the feet, please speak with a podiatrist who can recommend specific stretches for you.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Brian D. Exercise for Your Feet

Exercise for your feet can help you gain strength, mobility and flexibility in your feet. They say that strengthening your feet can be just as rewarding as strengthening another part of the body. Your feet are very important, and we often forget about them in our daily tasks. But it is because of our feet that are we able to get going and do what we need to. For those of us fortunate enough to not have any foot problems, it is an important gesture to take care of them to ensure good health in the long run.

Some foot health exercises can include ankle pumps, tip-toeing, toe rises, lifting off the floor doing reps and sets, and flexing the toes. It is best to speak with Our doctor to determine an appropriate regimen for your needs. Everyone’s needs and bodies are different, and the activities required to maintain strength in the feet vary from individual to individual.

Once you get into a routine of doing regular exercise, you may notice a difference in your feet and how strong they may become.

Ways to Avoid Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus can be a nuisance. Not only can the development of toenail fungus make the toenails appear brittle and ragged, it can also cause you pain. There are several things that a patient might consider doing to avoid the development of toenail fungus. First, you might try selecting shoes that offer a decent amount of space for the toes. Shoes that have tiny toe boxes can make the toenails rub up against the shoes. Second, you might also try alternating the shoes that you wear from day to day. When an individual wears the same pair of shoes day after day, the shoes can become damp from sweat, which only increases the likelihood that a toenail fungus will take hold. If you are particularly concerned about developing a toenail fungus, contact a podiatrist today. This is a foot specialist who can help you with your concerns.

Toenail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus is a condition that affects many people and can be especially hard to get rid of. Fortunately, there are several methods to go about treating and avoiding it.

Antifungals & Deterrence

Oral antifungal medicine has been shown to be effective in many cases. It is important to consult with a podiatrist to determine the proper regiment for you, or potentially explore other options.

Applying foot powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.

Sandals or open toed shoes – Wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Columbia and Pulaski, TN . We offer the newest diagnostic tools and technology to treat your foot and ankle needs.

Space in a Good Pair of Shoes

Although many shoe shoppers are primarily concerned with finding a fashionable pair of shoes that suits their specific style preferences, this might not be the best way to go about shoe shopping. First and foremost, shoes must fit the foot properly and comfortably. One critical aspect of what makes a shoe fit properly is the amount of space in the toe box. As a general rule, it is not a good idea for your toes to be pressed up against the front of the shoe. It is important to remember that your feet move around while you are in motion (walking, running, etc.), and so you need sufficient room in the toe box to account for this foot movement. So the next time that you are out shoe shopping and are trying a new pair of shoes on, you might consider moving around in them and noticing if you can feel the tips of your toes touching the front of the shoe. If you do, select a shoe with a larger toe box. Contact a podiatrist for more tips on proper shoe fitting.

Finding a properly-fitting shoe is important in reducing injuries and preventing foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Brian D. Jackson, DPM from Middle Tennessee Foot & Ankle Clinic. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in proper fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly. Be sure to wear shoes that support the overall structure of your body. Do your feet a favor and invest in several pairs of well-fitted shoes today.

Most women are aware of the changes that happen to their bodies during pregnancy, and the feet are no exception. It is common to have swollen feet which typically results from the excess build-up of fluid that occurs due to the growing fetus. Additionally, the medical reason for the feet to undergo changes can be from the natural process of producing the pregnancy hormone called relaxin. This can cause the muscles, tendons, and ligaments to loosen, and the feet may become wider. The legs and feet can experience reduced circulation, so it is beneficial to elevate them frequently during the day. It is essential to wear shoes that fit correctly, and this may help the arch to absorb the shock the feet endure when walking. As the pregnancy progresses, the center of gravity within the body may shift and cause uneven wear and tear on your shoes. Since the feet can endure many changes during pregnancy, it is suggested that you get the expert advice of a podiatrist.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with Brian D. Jackson, DPM from Middle Tennessee Foot & Ankle Clinic. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet
