Effective Methods for Foot Care

The feet are complex and have 26 bones connected to several ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Studies have shown the average person will walk twice the distance around the earth in their lifetimes, and this can wreak havoc on the feet. It is beneficial to maintain an everyday foot care routine, which can help the feet to feel and look their best. The feet are often taken for granted, and potential foot conditions may be avoided when inspected and pampered. A good routine can begin with washing and drying the feet thoroughly, followed by applying a good moisturizer. This helps replace lost moisture that can come from wearing shoes that have an open back. It is important to choose shoes that fit correctly. This can be done at the end of the day when the feet are their largest. Toenails are trimmed properly when they are cut straight across instead of in a curved fashion. Stretching the feet can feel good, and research has shown that walking is the best exercise for the feet. If you would like additional tips on how to practice everyday foot care, it is suggested that you ask a podiatrist who can provide you with the information you are seeking.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Brian D. Jackson, DPM from Neuhaus Foot and Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Ways to Reduce Pain From Flat Feet

When you stand, walk, or run, the body distributes your weight through the arches of the foot. If your arches are flat, the pressure is then transferred to the bones, ligaments, and muscles, which can cause pain. Luckily, having flat feet doesn’t always cause serious foot problems, thanks to shoes or insoles that provide proper arch support. Experts recommend a number of ways to reduce the painful effects of having flat feet. First, avoid wearing flats, such as flip flops or sandals, that offer little or no arch support. Next, try to find shoes that offer just the right amount of arch support, as too much or too little can contribute to pain. Other tips include wearing shoes that are appropriate for the activity you are doing, avoiding standing for long periods, and considering adding inserts to your already existing shoes. Much success has been found by wearing custom orthotics that are molded especially for your feet. For more information about orthotics for flat feet, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Brian D. Jackson, DPM from Neuhaus Foot and Ankle. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Causes of Plantar Hyperhidrosis

People with excessively sweaty feet may have a condition referred to as plantar hyperhidrosis. Both feet are generally affected and having this condition can cause embarrassment, depression, and anxiety. Studies suggest the cause of plantar hyperhidrosis may be a result of inadequacy within the nervous system that controls sweating. Triggers may be caused by pregnancy, having an overactive thyroid gland, and specific medications. Mild relief may be found when a stronger antiperspirant is used, in addition to wearing loose and lighter color clothing. This condition may also be helped when alcohol and spicy foods are limited. There are numerous treatment techniques available, so if you suffer from plantar hyperhidrosis, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist to determine the best one for you.

If you are suffering from hyperhidrosis contact Brian D. Jackson, DPM of Neuhaus Foot and Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

Hyperhidrosis of the Feet

Hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder that can cause people to have excessive sweating of their feet. This can usually occur all on its own without rigorous activity involved. People who suffer from hyperhidrosis may also experience sweaty palms.

Although it is said that sweating is a healthy process meant to cool down the body temperature and to maintain a proper internal temperature, hyperhidrosis may prove to be a huge hindrance on a person’s everyday life.

Plantar hyperhidrosis is considered to be the main form of hyperhidrosis. Secondary hyperhidrosis can refer to sweating that occurs in areas other than the feet or hands and armpits. Often this may be a sign of it being related to another medical condition such as menopause, hyperthyroidism and even Parkinson’s disease.

In order to alleviate this condition, it is important to see your doctor so that they may prescribe the necessary medications so that you can begin to live a normal life again. If this is left untreated, it is said that it will persist throughout an individual’s life.

A last resort approach would be surgery, but it is best to speak with your doctor to find out what may be the best treatment for you.

Many Facets to Work Shoes

Many people have foot pain when their work day is over, and it is important to wear shoes that fit correctly that can help to reduce the aches and pains of standing all day. In addition to this, it is urged to practice foot safety, and this begins with purchasing protective shoes. Accidents may be reduced when shoes have a slip-resistant outer sole that offers adequate grip if the shoes get wet with water, oil, or grease. It is beneficial the shoes have a multilayer insole that can help to reduce strain in different areas of the foot. Swollen feet may be kept at a minimum when the shoes that are worn have a large toe area, in addition to having a deep heel cup that can help the feet to align with the ankles. It is best that the shoes are made from durable materials, and this may help ensure minimum wear and tear. The end of the work day when the feet are at their largest is the best time to buy work shoes, and it is helpful to try the intended shoes on with the socks that will be worn. If you have questions about what type of shoes to buy for your work day, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can answer any questions you may have.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact Brian D. Jackson, DPM from Neuhaus Foot and Ankle. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.
